Why Rural Communities? Colorado’s rural communities are part of the fabric that makes Colorado the great place it is. These communities, once settled by families and hard-working Americans who believed in God, family, and the American dream of living free, are now being ravaged by drugs, crime, and death. People have lost their jobs and farmland, houses and family to depression, suicide, and addiction. They’ve lost hope and purpose, not knowing who they are anymore. 

People perish without hope. We are living in unprecedented times of devastation, loss, despair and darkness. More than a 1,000 Coloradans each year take their own lives. The state has one of the nation’s highest suicide rates, and rural communities are not exempt. Numerous studies have shown higher rates of suicide and depression in rural areas.

• Suicide among veterans has been steadily increasing. And rural veterans have a 20% increased risk of death by suicide compared to urban veterans.
• Farmers and ranchers face high suicide rates due to factors including long hours, geographic isolation, lack of social opportunities, and stigma surrounding mental health care. 

Closely related to the suicide rate is Colorado’s drug epidemic. Overdoses are now the leading cause of death in the state of Colorado. 

• Fentanyl coming across the border is now the leading cause of overdose. In Colorado there was a 70% increase in fatal fentanyl overdoses from 2020 to 2021.
• Per capita, the opioid overdose rate in rural communities is 45% higher than in cities.

Healing Wings is taking the Gospel to these communities to revive hope! By raising up leaders, we can empower the Church to become the resources that are lacking.
