Update #3

Update posted 1 year ago

We have some unfortunate news to share about King. We want to be open and transparent about the situation, so we will provide you with all the details available to us.

As you may remember, we sought legal assistance to give King a chance at a better life. The lawyer informed us that we were granted permission to evaluate King with the help of the shelter staff at Aurora. We appreciate the cooperative nature of the shelter staff in working out a plan for this evaluation. It took place this morning on Monday, October 2nd, 2023.

Last week, we managed to find a rescue, a foster, and an experienced evaluator who could potentially help us save King as well as post-training if he could be released. The evaluator, who specializes in dealing with aggression, went to the shelter today to assess King's behavior.

We want to make it clear that we brought in an independent evaluator to provide an unbiased assessment. We relied on her evaluation to determine whether fighting for King's life was feasible or if the shelter's claims of unsalvageable behavior were accurate.

During the two-hour evaluation, King displayed severe and unrelenting aggression without any opportunity for intervention or improvement. Unfortunately, it appears that modifying King's behavior is an insurmountable challenge. Regrettably, we were unable to remove him from the shelter.

We want to reiterate that this assessment was agreed upon by the evaluator we brought in, in collaboration with the shelter.

In our commitment to the No Kill philosophy, we understand the importance of saving every healthy and treatable homeless pet. The term "euthanasia" is reserved for those with untreatable conditions only. However, we must acknowledge that there is a small percentage of pets that fall into the category of being untreatable, for either medical or behavioral reasons.

We cannot and will not speculate on how King came to be an animal in so much distress.  That is for the authorities to pursue.  We will not respond to any reasons for his history as we do not have that information.  Our goal was to save King if possible.  And we cannot now reach this goal.

We share this news with a heavy heart, understanding that in rare cases the circumstances are beyond anyone’s control. We will continue our efforts to save every healthy and treatable Colorado pet, but sadly, King's case falls within the unusual exceptions. Our thoughts are with King, and we are grateful for the support and compassion you have shown throughout this process.

Elonna and her family are trying to save the life of their dog.  He is being held at Aurora Animal Shelter because he was injured and during that time while they were trying to get him help, his pain caused several bites to them while handling.

The family thought the shelter could help and reached out.  Instead, King wound up seized from court order and now appears to be on death row at the shelter.  The family thought animal control would help.  Now they need a lawyer to appeal to save King’s life and the retainer is $1500 (just the retainer).  We are looking for your help to raise $1500.

King is not a bad dog.  While speaking with the shelter they asked about history.  The family told a story of a minor nip from a year ago.  This is considered historical evidence of aggression.  The family disagrees.  If they knew that would be considered aggression, they would not have even mentioned it.  It was not a violent incident.  There have been no aggression incidents of biting with King as long as they have had him.  They got him when he was weeks old.

King was stung by a hornet or wasp. He was in a lot of pain. Their efforts to get him to a vet and the help he needed resulted in the bite incident that got him in trouble with the city. It was not his fault and his family including the members in the incident want him back.

The family calls King a loyal and cherished dog and is just a victim of circumstances beyond his control. He was attacked and stung and in pain and lashed out.  It is not a behavior issue.

When they first laid eyes on King, he was a tiny bundle of fur, just 3 1/2 weeks old. He had a happy proud pranced around which gave him his name.  They watched him grow into the majestic and loving companion he came to be.

King was surrendered to the Aurora Animal Shelter by court order On September 18th, 2023. The family engaged a trainer to help him overcome these struggles if needed.  He may just need to be back home to become his normal, loving self. Unfortunately, the shelter has not been forthcoming with vital information about his condition, making it even more challenging for us to help him.

King has always been well-mannered, deeply loved, and his playful nature has brightened up any room he enters. To the family, he is not just a dog; he is a cherished family member. Now, this family member is in desperate need of voices that can advocate for him, unafraid to step in and speak up. He has an attorney who is willing to be King's voice, but we need your support to support the legal fees and spread his story.

Our goal is to raise $1500 for King's attorney, who is already familiar with his situation and is committed to fighting for his well-being.

Assist us in any way you can. Whether it is through a simple donation, lending your voice to raise awareness, offering love and support, every contribution matters. Our three major goals are clear:

1. Give King the life he deserves by providing the necessary rehabilitation and recovery he needs to overcome his current challenges.

2. Advocate for him and raise funds for his medical and emotional needs, ensuring he receives the best care possible.

3. Ultimately, reunite King with his loving family, where he truly belongs, if it is within our power to do so.

Together, we can make a difference in King's life. Let us show the world the unwavering love and compassion that King has always received.
