We started Westword almost five decades ago -- in the wake of Watergate, the Vietnam War and Women's Liberation -- as a very vigorous exercise in freedom of the press, and as an alternative to the mainstream media. Not only did we believe that our writers should be free to cover, and uncover, what was really going on in Denver, but we wanted to share their work freely with the city, by making sure that the publication itself was absolutely free. Long before the rise of the internet, we worked hard to prove that a free alt-weekly could have value. It was a tough battle, but today no one questions the worth of free publications. They do question how long those publications will be around, and with good reason: Local journalism does not come cheap, and our president-elect now refers to members of the media as "enemies of the state." You can encourage our free, independent journalism by becoming a member. We appreciate your support.
If you donate from December 3-31, your donation will be doubled! We're excited to be supported by the Colorado Media Project's #newsCOneeds Matching Fund.
NOTE: The Colorado News Collaborative (COLab) is acting as our fiscal sponsor for this work. COLab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working with newsrooms like ours across the state to strengthen local public-service journalism.
By completing this form, you agree to receive occasional emails from our newsroom and from the Colorado News Collaborative.
