Growing Gardens, established in 1998, saw a need to develop skills in our population to increase our local food production and food security, to build personal capacity among our citizens, and create or strengthen community ties in the process. We began by helping the City of Boulder to build more community gardens. We developed programs for diverse populations to learn skills and experience the pleasure of growing food and the many things that food is associated with: good eating, a productive living, a healthy lifestyle, and engaged social interactions. Our activities are centered in the heart of Boulder on 11 acres of land that has been in agricultural use for the past 100 years.
Now, 26 years later, we've connected more than 199,000 people to their food, the land and each other; all thanks to your belief in our mission and support of our gardening programs. In fact, Growing Gardens has become a nationally recognized leader in sustainable urban agriculture and education programs.
Urban agriculture is important for a thriving community because it produces fresh vegetables and fruit for the urban population, helps to create a more self-reliant and secure food supply for the community, and provides citizens a closer relationship to the producers of their food and the land. We are grateful to have you in our Growing Gardens community.
"This program has provided me with reliable access to local, nutrient dense produce free of cost, which has allowed me to incorporate a wide variety of fresh produce into my diet that I may not otherwise have been able to afford. As a result my physical health was directly improved, as well as a release of the financial burden related to purchasing organically grown, local produce." - 2022 Work Trade Member
