We know more than we ever have about how young people learn and develop. Yet too many students do not have access to the learning environments they need  to thrive, due to systemic failings that have contributed to inequitable access to educational opportunities. These inequities disproportionately impact students of color and students growing up in low-income households.

Our AmeriCorps members serve in schools as student success coaches who help students cultivate foundational social, emotional and academic skills. They not only make a difference in the lives of students, but also acquire valuable skills and experience that prepare them to lead and make meaningful contributions where they live and work.

Our reach in Denver

  • 6 school partners
  • 50 AmeriCorps Members
  • 2,333 students served
  • 84,500 hours of service annually

Mission

City Year's mission is to advance educational equity by supporting students furthest from opportunity and to develop diverse leaders through national service who can work across lines of difference.

Background Statement

City Year was founded in 1988 by Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, then-roommates at Harvard Law School, who felt strongly that young people in service could be a powerful resource for addressing America's most pressing issues.

They built City Year with the conviction that one person can make a difference, and since its inception, City Year has promoted the vision of service as a common expectation - and a real opportunity - for citizens all around the world. City Year's vision is that one day the most commonly asked question of a young person will be, "Where are you going to do your service year?"

City Year narrowed its service in 2006 to focus solely on America's graduation crisis, deploying all Corps Members to public schools in underserved communities and designing its comprehensive Whole School Whole Child program to ensure maximum impact. City Year is currently serving in 29 cities across the United States and in three international affiliate sites located in Johannesburg, South Africa, and London, England. City Year Denver, launched in 2011 with the support of state and local government and education professionals, is proud to be one of those 29 sites.
