South Park Rail Society

The South Park Rail Society, a non-profit all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving railroad history, has initiated a funding drive to acquire the Como Roundhouse and the 10 acres it sits from private owners who helped save it from destruction. It is important to pass the ownership on to a dedicated organization to preserve and maintain it into perpetually for generations to appreciate and experience an historic operating mountain narrow gauge railroad that helped  develop Colorado.

Plans are to seek a state funding grant through History Colorado, funding application is in the process, that requires a "cash match" and including a remaining balance that will total $150,000. As of mid December $32,000 has been raised with a current balance of $118,000 needed to be raised to meet the property sale price and complete the purchase.

This unique Como Heritage Site (On US285 30 miles past Bailey and 10 miles east of Fairplay) includes the historic Roundhouse, preserved historic Railroad Depot, Historic Hotel under renovation, railroad track, Steam engine under repair and historic railcars. The Heritage Site is open during volunteer/open house days - allowing visitors to experience an historic operating railroad facility. The Roundhouse is a major part of the overall Como Project's effort to preserve and restore a segment of the old Denver South Park & Pacific railway complex in Como, Colorado. Of historical note, the Como Roundhouse is listed and recognized as a National and State Historical site and is the "oldest operating railroad Roundhouse in the United States"
