Join Denver YMCA Board Member Dean Koebel and the Koelbel Family in supporting the Denver Metro YMCA on the inaugural Colorado Youth Sports Giving Day!
Dean shared his YMCA story and how his experience playing basketball at the Schlessman Family YMCA shaped his life.
"I played youth sports at the Y through my elementary school. One particular memory I have is a basketball game in 2nd grade where I made my first basket in a game. Being the smallest one on the team I, didn't get the ball much. However, on this day, one of my teammates passed me the ball, while I found myself wide open near the basket. I took a deep breath, shot the ball, and to my amazement, it went in!
The gym erupted in cheers, and my friends rushed the court, giving me high-fives and pats on the back. It was an incredible feeling, not just because I scored, but because I felt truly part of a team.
Playing at the YMCA taught me important skills like teamwork, communication and leadership. The friendships I made there are some of the closest in my life, built on shared experiences both on and off the court to this day. That first basket was just the beginning of a lifelong journey in sports and the formation of lasting bonds.
This is why it’s important for my family and me to support YMCA youth sports with a gift. The Y provides a nurturing environment where kids can learn vital skills, build confidence and make lifelong friends. By donating, we help ensure that other children can have the same opportunities to grow and thrive.
I encourage others to support the YMCA as well. Every gift, no matter the amount, makes a difference. By contributing, we can help create more opportunities for kids to experience the joys and benefits of sports, just like I did. Together, we can make sure that the Y continues to be a place where young people can grow into confident and capable leaders."
