Oftentimes the youth in smaller communities like ours don’t have access to the same opportunities that youth in larger cities have readily available.  In an effort to provide these opportunities, we have worked hard over the past few years to establish the Bomb Squad traveling baseball program!  We are getting ready to begin our 5th year of providing players from across the San Luis Valley the opportunity to play, learn, and compete in tournaments across the state.  We currently have two teams that are composed of players ages 8-14 years old.  Our coaches are all volunteers and dedicate their time and energy to helping these young players develop.  Our primary goals are to: 1) Keep our kids motivated, active, and healthy; 2) Teach them the fundamentals and help them further develop their skills; 3) Develop teamwork and leadership skills; 4) Provide a wide range of opportunities and experiences. 

The San Luis Valley is full of rich culture and incredible people, but we are also faced with high levels of poverty and many families do not have the means to be part of something of this magnitude. As a self-made club, we are responsible for ensuring our program is sustainable and meeting the goals laid out.  This means we will be seeking sponsors, running fundraisers, and doing our best to ensure the program remains accessible and manageable for families in our community.  Sponsorships would support our ability to cover entry fees for tournaments, uniforms, and necessary equipment such as bats, helmets, baseballs, catchers gear, etc.  Any sponsorship, donation, as well as fundraising will help ensure that we are able to provide a well rounded and comprehensive experience for our players and their families as well as keeping the registration costs as low as possible.  Each tournament has registration fees between $700 - $900 per team.  Donations and sponsorships help pay for this as well!  

Our program currently has a small registration fee of $150 to help cover uniforms and tournament entry fees. --Other travel teams’ participation fees range from $500 to $1,000 per child so we are doing our best to keep ours more reasonable.-- We are making every effort possible to keep our program accessible to everyone and do not want financial confines to be a barrier.  However, due to our rural location, there are also travel costs associated with each tournament.  Each family pays their own travel costs to attend tournaments; tournaments are held over 2-3 days, in different communities such as Pueblo, Montrose, Denver, Buena Vista and Gunnison.  These extra costs include fuel, hotel rooms, and meals. This cost could approach $500 or more per tournament. 

One major goal of this fundraiser is to aid in keeping participation fees low and help families with travel costs. We would love to provide gas cards or travel stipends to our families!  Another goal is to expand the travel program to other age groups and be sustainable for future years. Additional funds would help us expand to other age groups and provide experiences to more and more children in our area.
