Platte River Academy is a charter school that was designed to enable parents, teachers and community members to take responsible risks and create new, innovative, and more flexible ways of educating all children within the public school system which has resulted in expanded choices for parents and pupils.
After two decades, we can say that we now serve nearly 540 students in grades PK-8. We have become a John Irwin School of Excellence 2001-2023. Platte River Academy is a successful school for three reasons: our exceptional staff, our involved parents and our hard- working students.
Platte River Academy Outdoor Learning Park: A Space to Grow and Thrive
At Platte River Academy, we believe learning extends far beyond the walls of a classroom. That’s why we’re embarking on an exciting journey to create an Outdoor Learning Park—a transformative environment where students can connect with nature, engage in hands-on learning, and build essential life skills.
Our Vision
The Outdoor Learning Space will be a multi-purpose area designed to inspire curiosity, support emotional well-being, and foster creativity. It will include:
Interactive Learning Areas: Open-air spaces equipped for collaborative learning.
Sensory Zones: Areas designed to provide calming breaks for students, especially those with sensory or learning challenges.
Gardens and Natural Features: Spaces for gardening, science experiments, and nature exploration.
Small Group Meetings: Allow for outdoor seating spaces for smaller groups who normally would meet in the school hallways
Why This Matters
Outdoor learning enhances academic performance, physical health, and social-emotional skills. For students who benefit from alternative learning environments, this space will provide much-needed opportunities to explore, reset, and grow.
How You Can Help
We are raising $150,000 to make this vision a reality. Your support will go directly toward:
Constructing the space (landscaping, seating, and structures)
Integrating therapeutic and sensory-friendly elements
Purchasing educational tools and materials for outdoor use
